Should You Give CBD To Your Beloved Dog?

While it’s true that CBD oil is incredible in helping lots and lots of people around the globe in improving their quality of life, is that also the case for animals when you give CBD oil to them? Will CBD oil for dogs and cats give just as many health benefits as it gives for us humans?

The problem with Pets and CBD Oil

Cbd oil for your dogs or cats sounds like a good idea. I mean, everybody nowadays talks about CBD oil and it seems to be the wonder of the world solving all the issues a human and animal might have.

The biggest problem with CBD oil and animals is that there is very little research done about this topic, because of that, nobody can’t really tell and give good advice about giving CBD oil to your pets.

Some will say that CBD oil for dogs is good to give, others will say that you should really not give CBD oil because of the unknown effects and lack of research and the lack of regulation.

I asked lots of vets and people around the globe that work with dogs on a daily base, to ask them about their opinions, and the result is are almost 50/50.

One side says that it’s too early to give CBD oil to dogs because of the lack of scientific research, the other side says it’s something you should try because it has a great effect on the well-being of the animals and helps enormously with easing pain.

To be honest, it’s no surprise for me at all that 50% of the vets and professionals advised to give CBD oil and the other half was advising against it.

There is just not enough evidence and regulation for the moment to give solid advice on giving CBD oil to your pet.

The other problem is that a lot of vets worrying about the enormous amounts of fake, poisonous CBD oil that is available on the market. Because of the lack of regulation, companies can extract and produce CBD oil in their own ways.

CBD oil comes from the cannabis plant so the chances are very high that — if not processed the correct way — there will be traces of THC and toxic metals left behind.

Animals react heavily to THC and toxic metals. That’s why it very important to buy good quality CBD that contains as little as possible THC.

Why 50% of the vets recommend CBD?

Most of the vets and professionals I spoke with were speaking from their own private experience or client experiences. The reasons to give CBD to your dogs or cats are different, but still, a lot of them gave it because their dogs/cats suffer from:

  • Anxiety
  • Pain
  • Seizures
  • Stress
  • Cancer
  • Arthritis

Read some advise from the professionals I spoke with:

Although there is a lack of scientific evidence, there are some researches done that showed very positive results when using CBD on a dog suffering from osteoarthritis. Click this link to read about research done on a dog that suffered from osteoarthritis. The results are impressive.

Also, for example, the AKC (AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) is sponsoring a study through the Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, that will test the use of CBD in treatment-resistant epileptic dogs).

Why “NOT” give CBD to your healthy dog

I believe that when you have perfectly healthy animals you should not give CBD to them.

Pets are like people in that they have different reactions to medications, supplements, food, etc.

From a behavioral perspective, it’s always best to deal with a behavior problem, such as aggression, separation anxiety, or fear, with training and desensitization.

Using CBD oil for dogs and cats could help during the process, however, it should not be relied upon as a solution.

The top reasons why you should not give CBD to your pets:

  • This industry (including production standards) is entirely unregulated, so products will vary in concentration, purity, quality, and sourcing between companies, and even between batches.  Therefore, it is nearly impossible to determine an appropriate dose, and there is no way to assess the quality of the products.
  • THC can be extremely harmful to pets.  Most CBD products claim that their product contains no traces of THC, but because of a lack of production standards/quality control, testing has indicated that many “CBD products” actually do contain THC.
  • Even if CBD is determined to be safe for some animals, that may not apply to other kinds of animals. For example, cats metabolize many chemicals very differently from dogs and substances that are safe for dogs can be quite toxic to cats

Again, CBD is uncontrolled and untested. The future holds some promise, but the present is unknown and somewhat dangerous if you don’t buy the right CBD.

I personally would be wary of many companies out there unless they have done actual testing where you can view the results of the tests. Since CBD is not regulated the “active” ingredients could mislead by some companies, so you better be careful!

In what circumstances should you give CBD to your pet?

Like I mentioned earlier in this article, it’s recommended when your pet is suffering from a serious condition.

Reports of pet owners and vets show that CBD is helping those kinds of pets dealing with stress, anxiety, pain, arthritis, cancer, inflammation, and much more.

The key is to buy the right product. If you want to make sure you buy the right product with no fear or doubt, I would recommend the company cbdMD, they sell a lot of different products specially made for animals.

CbdMD sells high-quality products that are third party tested. Giving this to your pet is 100% safe to give.

Why it’s important to buy the right quality product for your pet

There are a lot of products out there that don’t contain what the label says it contains. I highly recommend making sure the product is organic, so it does not contain any pesticides, fungicides or solvents.

Also, always buy from a reputable company (like cbdMD) that uses a third-party lab to analyze the CBD oil for dogs and all other products they sell.

You want to make sure that the CBD oil for your dogs or cats is coming from the hemp plant, not the marijuana plant, and that it has very, very little or no THC in it.

A full spectrum hemp product is what you want for maximum results. If you are absolutely opposed to THC, then look for a broad-spectrum product.

CBD isolate may not give you the results you are hoping for as it is not as effective as full spectrum hemp & broad spectrum hemp. The manufacturer should always provide a certificate of analysis.

Finally, remember that higher quality products will cost more, and you want high quality so be prepared for that if you will give CBD to your pet.

What is the right dosage for your pet?

If you decided to give CBD oil to your dog see if it improves your dog’s quality of life then the next step is to consider the dose.

How much you should give your pet depends on a couple of things. First, the product — how much CBD does it contain — second is the weight, the heavier your animal is the more it will need. The third is breed, every breed needs a different dosage to feel the effect of CBD on them.

There is a rule of thumb you could follow, showed by the table below:

Pet WeightAvg. Dose (200mg)
10 lbs¼ dropper
20 lbs½ dropper
30 lbs½ dropper + 6 drops
40 lbs1 dropper
50 lbs1 dropper + 3 drops
60 lbs1 dropper + 5 drops
70+ lbs1 dropper + 12 drops

Keep in mind that this is just advice if you want professional advice you should always consult with your vet.

Are there any side effects?

The great thing about CBD is that there are almost no side effects, even when overdosing. The side effects in the case of an overdose are:

  • Thirst
  • Sleepiness
  • Lower blood pressure at high doses

When this happens, you should lower the dose and everything should be fine. Just be very careful you don’t give products with too much THC in it!

You can see that the side effects of CBD for dogs are very minimal so you don’t take much risk when you give CBD to your pets.

I believe that giving CBD to your dog or cat is a good idea, but only if it’s necessary in case of a sickness like cancer, joint pain, arthritis, anxiety, or something similar to that.

CBD is super beneficial in lowering the pain and stress of an animal. That being said, if your pet is perfectly healthy but just doesn’t listen to you or doesn’t meet up on your expectations then you should train him — not giving CBD to calm him down — it’s not correct and also not responsible because of the lack of real scientific evidence.
