What is CBG And What Are The Benefits Of Using CBG vs. CBD?
Most of us know by now what CBD is, CBD has grown a lot in popularity in the last couple of years. Now there is a newly discovered cannabinoid called “CBG”. What is it, and why is it growing so quickly in popularity? What is the difference between CBD and CBG?
What is CBG?
Lots of people heard about THC and CBD, but few people ever heard about CBG.
CBG stands for Cannabigerol. This newly discovered cannabigerol is one of the non-psychoactive cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant.
CBG is the main element from where all other cannabinoids like CBD and THC are created from, therefore it’s also called a “stem cell”.
The cannabinoid CBG reacts directly with the cannabinoid receptors in the brain, just like THC (a psychoactive cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant) does, the difference, however, is that cannabigerol acts like a buffer to the psychoactivity of THC by lightning the paranoia that sometimes caused by higher levels of THC.
Research has shown that it helps with pain, inflammation, and even helps to slow down the production of cancer cells.
Strong strains high of cannabigerol can also help with treating health conditions like inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, and Crohn’s disease, and much more.
How is CBG made?
They extract CBG from the hemp/cannabis plants. It’s extracted through a process that uses solvents like ethanol or CO2 to extract the cannabinoid.
During the extraction process, they dissolve hemp in this solution. This solution draws the terpenes and cannabinoids out of the hemp plant.
After they complete this process, the solution gets evaporated with heat under a vacuum to remove all the gas and other toxic substances. Left is a high purity CBG concentrate.
To get a higher purity of CBG, breeders are experimenting with different strains, cross-breeding of the hemp plant and genetic manipulation.
CBG vs CBD, what is the difference?
In the last couple of years, CBD has grown a lot in popularity. CBG is a cannabinoid only discovered recently. Because of this, there is not much known about this cannabinoid for the moment.
Even though there is not much knowledge about CBG, researchers found a couple of interesting differences that could make it very popular in the next couple of years.
The main difference between CBD and CBG is that CBG interacts directly with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), triggering CB1 and CB2 receptors to regulate neurohormones, which affects how the body governs a certain state such as mood, appetite and pain management.
CBD has a relatively low affinity for cannabinoid receptors and acts mostly through indirect interactions with the endocannabinoid system.
Is CBG better than CBD?
It’s kind of difficult for the moment to say which one is the best. CBG and CBD share a lot of the same compounds. Still, there are some important differences between the two that make CBG more effective than CBD.
The most important difference is the way how it interacts with the ECS (endocannabinoid system) in your brain. CBD has a lower affinity with the ECS, meaning that CBD is not a “first choice” compound.
CBG interacts directly with the ECS and activates both CB1 and CB2 receptors, it appears to even boost the production of a chemical in the body that increases dopamine.
Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that helps regulate appetite, sleep, and mood.
What are the benefits of CBG?
Study has shown that CBG benefits with the treatment of lots of medical conditions like:
- Pain relief
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Huntington’s disease
- Crohn’s disease
- CBG skincare
CBG is a compound discovered not so long ago, so researchers are just at the beginning of understanding this new compound.
Probably it helps with lots of other medical conditions, but for the moment there are still lots of studies going on the fully understanding CBG and its potential.
Does CBG get you high?
The short answer is “no”, it doesn’t make you feel “high”. In fact, researchers found out it counteract the intense feelings of THC, without CBG, you could experience an intense bad trip when smoking cannabis.
It calms the person down that smoked cannabis with a high percentage of THC.
What kinds of CBG products are available on the market?
There are different forms available on the market, like:
You can eat, vape, or dab CBG. CBG isolate is available in powder, oil, or crystal form.
It’s easy to make your own CBG products once you have the powder, oil, or crystals in your house. Click here to find out how to make your own CBG / CBD products.
Does CBG help with anxiety?
Anxiety is a natural response to stress. Anxiety is a feeling of apprehension and fear about what’s coming. Speaking in public, your first day at work, a date, etc. Anxiety is a normal feeling that everybody experiences.
If your feelings of anxiety are too strong or last too long, then there could be a problem, if you experience these strong feelings then CBG could be very helpful for you.
Research has shown that it helps with reducing anxiety. It binds to certain endocannabinoid receptors in the brain that lowers your anxiety. If you experience anxiety than CBG is something, you should definitely want to try.
Does CBG help with Alzheimer’s disease?
Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive, irreversible brain disorder that slowly destroys thinking and memory skills, and eventually, it even destroys the ability to carry out the simplest tasks. Most people that have this disease will first notice it around their mid-60s.
For the moment, we know very little about CBG and Alzheimer’s disease. Research has shown that CBG protects the blood vessels and nervous system, but for the moment there is no direct proof that it helps with Alzheimer’s disease.
What is the right CBG dosage?
Every person is different, so there is no silver bullet that states what the right dosage is for you. Still, there are some guides you can follow to give you a good start.
The following chart shows you how you can start off in a good direction with the following recommended dose:
|Based on products |
with 2% CBG in it
|Prevention and harmonization of bodily functions||Stomach problems / Good sleep / Mild pain||Tension / Stress / Anxiety|
|Morning||3 drops||3 drops||3 drops|
|Evening||x||3 drops||3 drops|
We can use the following chart for general recommendations:
|Based on products with 5% CBG in it||Low problematic medical conditions||More serious medical conditions||Very serious medical conditions|
|Morning||3 drops||3 drops||4 drops|
|Evening||3 drops||3 drops||4 drops|
|After one week:|
|Morning||5 drops||5 drops||5 drops|
|Evening||5 drops||5 drops||5 drops|
|After two weeks:|
|Morning||x||5 drops||7 drops|
|Afternoon||x||5 drops||7 drops|
|Evening||x||5 drops||7 drops|
Note.: These listed recommendations are for adults that weigh between 60-90 kg. The dosage is very individual and everyone knows best for himself if he/she can increase the dose. You should always start with small doses, observe how the body reacts and then increase the number of drops if necessary.
Are there any side effects?
Taking CBG could cause some side effects. These side effects are not heavy and mostly happen only at the beginning or when the dosage is too high. These are the most common side effects that you could experience:
- Dry mouth
- Weight change
- Changes in appetite
If you experience one of the side effects mentioned in the list then chances are that the dosage you take is too high. Just lower the dosage and these side effects should go away.
If these side effects don’t go away after a couple of weeks and after lowering the dosage, contact your doctor, your doctor should be able to give you advice.
Is CBG legal?
CBG doesn’t make you feel high, so in general, it’s legal to buy and use. You should check however if your state has legalized the hemp flower.
If the hemp flower is legal in your state, then CBG is also legal. If not, then also CBG is illegal to buy and use.
CBG is an amazing new discovery that shows lots of potential for lots of different medical conditions. Researchers already discovered some ways in how CBD can help treat certain kinds of medical conditions. The exciting thing is that this is only the tip of the iceberg.
Let’s see what the future will bring us regarding CBG.
